This magnificent wedding cake was once displayed in the bakery shop of CH Philpott in Potters Lane, Basingstoke.

It is believed to have been made in 1898 and was donated to the Willis Museum in Basingstoke in 1995 by the baker’s daughter, Ruby Philpott, who found it safely tucked away in the attic.

A large crack in one side is said to have been caused by the impact of a WWII bomb hitting nearby. Although the cake was still found to be moist inside 10 years ago, due to its increasingly fragile state it was injected with a consolidant or glue, so any attempts to eat it are not recommended.
