Epstein made four different studies of Dolores in that year. The one in Hampshire’s collection is from the third casting plaster - it is sometimes known as the ‘bust with crossed arms’. According to Epstein himself, he was pleased with this third bust which he described as ‘tragic and magnificent’. Sadly, Dolores – not her birth name – died of cancer in 1934 aged just 40.
A bronze sculpture modelled on a woman known as Dolores was given to Hampshire Museums Service in 1998. Made by the American Sir Jacob Epstein (1880-1959) in 1923, it is on display at the Allen Gallery in Alton.
