Photographs are acquired primarily for their topographical or collections-related content rather than for any artistic merit, although the two sometimes occur in the same image.

The collection currently consists of over 250,000 photographic prints, negatives, glass plate negatives, lantern slides and transparencies and includes the largest collection of historical photographic material of Winchester and district held by any organisation in Hampshire.

The material stored at the Chilcomb and F2 collections centres in Winchester is available by prior appointment, to researchers and through specialist workshops and tours.  A selection of photographs are available to view online on our searchable online collections website and we also have a Facebook page Hampshire in Old Photographs where we regularly post photographs of local places and people.

Electronic or printed copies of photographs from the collection can be supplied for private or commercial use, prices are available upon request.
