In 2020-21, £64,800 has been awarded from Arts Council England and the Department for Education for the fifth year of the 'Reaching Out' North Hampshire Museum Education Partnership.
As well as providing funding for museum partners to develop and deliver curriculum-linked learning programmes for target schools in the North Hampshire Area, this phase will support the development of digital resources and Arts Award across the partner sites. The HCT sites included in this project are Aldershot Military Museum, Basing House, Andover Museum of the Iron Age, and Milestones Museum; while partner sites are Winchester Military Museums and Gilbert White House & The Oates Collection.
Over-arching aims of the project are to:
- Reach out to schools in North Hampshire that have above average indices of deprivation and/or that show a lack of engagement with museums as part of their classroom teaching in order to forge new, sustainable relationships between these schools and their local museums to enhance pupils' education
- Bring together a group of partner museums to deliver this project and provide a diverse range of opportunities with which schools can engage, as well as strengthen existing museum networks and their future resilience
In 2018-19 the project supported the development of EYFS and SEND learning provision across the partner sites.
In 2017-18 the Reaching Out! partners worked with Neck of the Woods video production to document the variety of learning provision delivered in 2017-18. The film above shows several HCT sites and includes interviews with teachers, facilitators and pupils.
Year on year the Reaching Out! Museum Education Partnership is working with more schools and their pupils. Last year the partnership exceeded the project’s targets set by Arts Council England/ Department for Education and welcomed 1964 pupils from over 40 qualifying schools into their museums. More than half of these schools benefitted from the project’s travel bursary scheme, receiving up to £400 towards the cost of the coach hire for their visit.
