All Our Futures – Three projects developed with the Arts Society Basingstoke.

The Arts Society Basingstoke

Working with 100 children aged 7-9 from Winklebury Junior School, this project explores biodiversity, the value of microhabitats, the current threats to local wildlife and sustainable solutions in Basingstoke. Students worked with experts from Hampshire Wildlife Trust to research the diverse non-human life that lives in their town. These findings were used to generate a large-scale collaborative artwork, created using recycled fabric and print techniques, led by textile artist Vanessa Rolf. story story — vanessa rolf

Through this project children explored issues of sustainability, the interconnected networks of our world.

Printing Like William Morris

This is a project which promoted an understanding of how the natural world can inspire product design. Year 4 students at St Bede’s Catholic School began by studying repeating designs by William Morris and used this knowledge to develop designs of their own. Textile Artist, Vanessa Rolf and volunteers from the Arts Society, helped the students create their own printing blocks to print their designs onto tote bags.

Rail 200

Railway 200

The Arts Society Basingstoke has been providing exhibitions of artwork in the night subway and waiting rooms on platforms one and four at Basingstoke Railway Station, for the past four years. The exhibitions provide an opportunity to celebrate the work of artists from local schools, colleges and community groups and provide a pleasant environment for passengers using the station. In response to the nationwide campaign to celebrate 200 years of the Railway in 2025, students from Queen Mary’s College have created a tiled mural for platform four. This has been led by Ceramic Artist, Michelle Shields and will be on display at the Railway Station from September 2025. Preparation for this work will be on display as part of this exhibition. https://www.michelleshields.co.uk/
