Artists Mary Waltham and Jackie Amies respond to the surrounding ancient woodlands of East Hampshire.

Undisturbed soils and decaying wood create conditions that encourage species diversity of plants, invertebrates, fungi, birds and mammals. Ancient woods are also a living record of centuries of interaction and interdependence between man and woodland, often containing remnants of archaeological features such as wood banks, pits and charcoal kilns. No surprise then that these woods are also home to rich and diverse myths and folklore.

Ancient Woodland: A celebration of place is entirely inspired by and embedded in the ancient woodlands of our locality. It invites visitors to the Allen Gallery to be curious about these rare and special areas that we are fortunate enough to have access to.

About the artists:

Mary’s work reflects a powerful interest in the fragility of Ancient Woodland viewed through the eyes of both artist and scientist. She explores the unique character of ancient woodland that she visits regularly in a selection of 2D and 3D media, using a range of art disciplines including drawing, painting, and installation works. She often incorporates soil, bark, moss and wood directly into her work.

Jackie has responded mainly to the unique environment of Ashford Hanger, through walking, collecting, drawing, writing and photographing the biodiverse rich species that are found there. Then returning to her studio to reflect on the findings within this National Nature Reserve, work is created to encourage conversations and engage the viewer in a curious and re-imagined artistic way, slowing down and observing to ‘celebrate a sense of place’ within this special and unique Ancient Woodland.

Workshops & Events: A programme of activities, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, will accompany the show, exploring some of the themes presented here and in our permanent collection. Look out for creative workshops using natural materials, including clay - a raw material that lies beneath many of our local ancient woodlands. Other events will bring to life these historic woodland settings in which some items in the gallery's collection, especially those of the pre-industrial era, might have been produced.
