Basing House – A lost Tudor Palace

Basing House was the grandest and most important private household in Tudor England and was also a primary target for destruction by Oliver Cromwell during the first English Civil War.

To date only the Holler engraving (c.1643) provides an accurate external depiction of the Old and New Houses.

Throughout our season this tour will help you to imagine what Basing House was like in all its Tudor scale and splendour. Our computer generated 3D reconstruction of the Old House and New house buildings is based on the detailed site plan created as part of the archaeology conducted in the early 1900s.

This tour is Included in the admission ticket.

Please meet our volunteer tour guide at our visitor centre for a prompt start at 1.30pm on Tuesday or 11.15am on Thursday*. The tour will last c. 90 minutes.

Hot and cold drinks are available to purchase from our visitor centre.

This tour can also be pre-booked for group visits of 10+ by prior arrangement for other days and times to be agreed. Please email basing.house@hampshireculturaltrust.org.uk

Tours are subject to weather conditions. *No tour Thursday 11 July.
