Bold & Beautiful Florals in Gouache - An Adult's Creative Workshop
Workshop: Bold & Beautiful Florals in Gouache
Instructor: Nicky Bell
Focus: Mastering Opacity, Folk-Art Inspiration, and Botanical Simplification
Workshop Overview
This intensive one-day session introduces you to the vibrant world of gouache. We will move away from traditional realism to embrace the bold, flat colours and rhythmic patterns found in folk art. You will learn to see the "skeleton" of a flower and translate it into a contemporary, stylised masterpiece.
Gouache is such a rewarding medium for florals because of its matte, velvet-like finish and the way it allows for layering "light over dark"—something you can't easily do with traditional watercolour.
Morning Session: Foundations & Fluidity
Welcome & Historical Context: A brief look at bold folk-art florals (like Scandinavian and Eastern European styles) and why gouache is the perfect medium for this aesthetic.
* The "Creamy" Consistency: Demonstration on the perfect water-to-paint ratio. We’ll practice achieving that signature flat, opaque look without the streaks.
* Deconstructing Botany: * How to look at a complex flower and see basic shapes (circles, teardrops, and fans).
* Sketching Exercise: Translating reference photos into simplified "graphic" line drawings.
Afternoon Session: Colour & Composition
* Colour Chemistry: * Building a personal palette that pops.
* Mixing "muted" vs. "vibrant" tones to create depth without using black or white as a crutch.
* Layering and Edges: * Techniques for "sharp" edges.
* Adding fine-line details (stamens, veins, and dots) over dried base layers to create that iconic folk-art "pop."
* The Final Piece: Participants will apply their sketches and colour palettes to create a completed floral pattern study on high-quality paper.
Wrap Up:
* Finding Your Voice: A discussion on how to take these techniques and apply them to your own future projects to develop a unique artistic style.
* Gallery Walk: A positive group sharing of the day’s bold creations.
Key Learning Outcomes
* Technical Mastery: Confidently mix gouache to the correct consistency for both flat washes and fine details.
* Simplification: The ability to strip a flower down to its most beautiful, basic elements.
* Folk-Art Flair: Understanding how to use symmetry and repetition to create a high-impact composition.
What to Bring: All primary materials are provided, but feel free to bring your favourite reference photos of local wildflowers or garden blooms!
