This summer at The Arc, the galleries will be flooded with captured tranquil moments and atmospheric landscapes of the changing seasons, set amongst the hills, valleys and rivers of Hampshire.
As our celebration of Fred Appleyard’s paintings takes place in the main gallery (The Gallery, 21 June – 18 September), City Space gallery hosts a group exhibition that will rival the Victorian painter's skill and devotion.
City Space brings together the work of six local artists who primarily paint plein air (outside). Esther Cornell, Dorothy Dent, Karen Popham, David Thomas, Paul Treasure and Michael Weller brave the elements to immerse themselves in the landscape, to gather their inspirations and connect with their subject.
Canvases and sketchbooks freshly set from the fields and studios of Hampshire will be brought together for the exhibition, in which the humble cloud will prove as significant as the grandiosity of the setting sun. Portraiture and still life will also feature, as each artist explores the interplay between light and dark.
Works are available for sale and look out for special events with the artists.
