Our new regular Thursday music nights are an opportunity to enjoy some of the best of what our region has to offer, from the very local to those from only slightly further afield. With sometimes one, two or three acts on the schedule, and presented in a safe and friendly environment, we hope that you’ll enjoy the company of long standing Ashcroft Arts favourites or find something new to love.
Provincials are a critically acclaimed dark-folk trio based in Hampshire. From their improv beginnings the group's songs have gradually coalesced into melancholic, explicitly English pop songs, becoming part of the modern English folk music lineage of Vaughan Williams, Incredible String Band, Talk Talk and These New Puritans, whilst also evoking the hushed reverence of Stars of the Lid and Low. Uniquely poised between sonic exploration and the direct unadorned storytelling of English folk, theirs is a sound quite unlike any other.
"Dripping atmosphere like an abandoned Victorian railway tunnel...Polly Perry's voice is a slow-moving river through a mutable landscape of guitar arpeggios and walls of echoed atonal sound." – R2 Magazine
"A very dark, ethereal alt-classical jazz soundscape. Poetic, brooding, resonant and menacing...an edge of Ennio Morricone." - Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music
"By turns ethereal, unsettling and hypnagogic ...A fresh alternative take on English Folk. Wonderful...beautifully intricate ...a stellar stellar band" - The Independent.
Original and versatile with her performances and song choices, Krista Green is a force to be reckoned with. Whether it’s high energy sing-alongs sure to get people dancing, or a more relaxed, chilled vibe you are seeking...she will guarantee a great show. With soulful, smoky vocals and skillful rhythm guitar, the winner of BMTH Unplugged 2011 is available as a solo artist, or with her band 'Krista Green and The Bees'. The Bournemouth born musician has a large repertoire of popular covers and catchy original material, wowing new crowds wherever she goes and continually growing her fan base.
Her covers range from the likes of The Beatles, Bob Marley, and Buddy Holly through the years to present day artists such as Ed Sheeran, KT Tunstall and George Ezra. Her original material ranges from gentle and laid-back, to up-beat and funky; and her captivating stage presence will be sure to grab the audiences attention and get their feet tapping. Krista is no stranger to playing live and regularly travels around the country to entertain new crowds. Self-taught guitarist and drummer she has been song writing for fourteen years, has three albums available to buy on iTunes, and is currently working on her fourth album.
