Come along to Basing House over the Easter weekend, and enjoy a living history event for all the family as the Sealed Knot re-enacts the siege of Basing House.
If you're looking for some fresh spring air and a little excitement for the whole family (including the dog!), why not make your way to Basing House on Sunday 21st or Monday 22nd of April for the battle display. Additionally, the living history will be on display from 11:00 to 16:30 on Saturday and throughout the weekend.
This is the second of the Sealed Knot 375 anniversary Basing House events. It’s late summer of 1644, following the ill-fated attack on Odiham the Basing garrison have been pursued by Colonel Richard Norton back to Basing House. The garrison now reduced to 175 men with little food and ammunition dangerously low. Norton’s men, mortars and heavy artillery are once again besieging Basing House. With powerful Parliamentary garrisons in Abingdon, Reading and Newbury and the Kings army in the west, Basing was unlikely to be rescued. The only hope is Colonel Gage’s relief column sent from Oxford which will have to covertly make the journey to Basing and defeat Norton’s troops to resupply the Garrison so enabling them to hold out until rescue by the Kings armies.
On Sunday & Monday
The Great barn, Visitors Centre and living history display will be open from 11:00 inside the main house gardens.
At around 14:00 the troops will assemble outside the Millstone Pub, Old Basing.
The Army will move on the Great Barn where a battle may just be about to start at 14:30.
Then, follow the Armies into Basing House for the displays and main battle starting at around 15:00.
Finally at around 16:00 the Armies (those still standing) will return to their camps...
As well as this annual battle re-enactment on the grounds of Basing House, you can enjoy viewing the ruins, walled garden, museum, Tudor barn, Basing Mouse trail for kids and more for the cost of your special event admission (annual ticket not required.)
