May half term is just around the corner in Hampshire, running from Saturday, May 25 to Sunday, June 2, and it promises to be packed with exciting activities. Hampshire Cultural Trust’s (HCT) museums, arts centres, and galleries across the county are hosting a variety of events. Whether you're exploring Viking history in Winchester, engaging in gardening in Aldershot, learning about biodiversity in Basingstoke, stepping back into the 1940s at Milestones Museum or enjoying bubble making in Christchurch, HCT ensures there's something fun for everyone this half term!

Ways of the warrior – Saturday 25 May to Sunday 2 June, 10am-5pm (except Friday 31 May, 10am-1pm). 

This May half term, join the residents of Winchester as they prepare for the Battle of Edington. With this great final battle almost upon us, we need as many soldiers as we can, so come get ready to be part of the Anglo-Saxon army! Take part in a shield wall, learn how to handle a weapon and let out a fierce battle cry!

Mid-week explorer kids' history workshops – Wednesday 29 May, 10:30am-2:30pm.      

Explore the past with our fun-filled kid's history-based events, running on Wednesday of May half term school. From code-breaking to military drills, we'll be running activities based on the history of the armed forces based in the local area.

Alton Arts Festival - Street stories workshop – Monday 27 May, 10am-2pm.

Celebrate and share your favourite characters from stories and literature! Whether it is a character from your favourite book, myth or legend - or even local folklore - the festival team wants to see your own creations in 2D or 3D on display across Alton.

An opportunity to explore the nightlife of the Allen Gallery’s garden and learn how light traps are used to study moths. Led by moth expert Chris Piper.

We'll be launching our new regular Iron Age children's history event this May half term. On 30 May,  we'll be making some Iron Age coins, come and join us to make some replica Iron Age coins.

D-Day commemoration and 1940s Week – Saturday 25 May- Sunday 2 June, during opening hours. 

Join us for an eventful 1940s week as we look at Hampshire's involvement in World War II and specifically our contribution to the efforts of D-Day. Demonstrations are running throughout the day from Make Do and Mend, Ministry of Food and ARP to model war re enactments. A day out for all with an Evacuee Trail running for children.

Explore Rockbourne with a Roman – Sunday 26 May and Monday 27 May (bank holiday), 11am-3pm.        

Come face to face with a Roman Soldier and unlock the secrets of Rockbourne Roman Villa. John Smith is a costumed interpreter with over 40 years of experience as an archaeologist and curator and will be here throughout the day in full military costume chatting about all aspects of Roman life; both military and domestic.

Come and experience this wonderful natural resource and learn pottery. You will be using two types of clay to make sculptural creations to be fired. This workshop is designed for children who can sit with either a parent/guardian or alone and can listen to short instructions. Although clay is a natural material, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to monitor the child’s use.

Creating fizzy paintings is an exciting method to express creativity while exploring scientific concepts simultaneously. This fun workshop transforms the traditional volcano science experiment into a lively art project. In this hands-on workshop, children will learn the art of finger knitting. With no needles required, children will learn the basic techniques of finger knitting, from casting on to creating beautiful stitches and binding off. Spring has sprung and our gardens are starting to bloom with colourful flowers. Let's discover more about them! We've placed pictures of eight spring-time flowers around the museum. Can you spot them all? Have fun hunting for the flowers, mark them off on your spotter sheet and take home a prize.
