As a seasonal Front of House volunteer, you will play an important role in welcoming and meeting the needs of visitors to Rockbourne Roman Villa. Giving your time to volunteering within our small team, helps us  keep this unique museum and archaeological site open to the public. You will work primarily in our shop, greeting visitors on arrival, selling admission tickets, introducing them to the site, handling purchases within the shop and ensuring high standards of presentation throughout the site. There are also opportunities to develop and lead guided tours and steward during our special evening music, theatre and comedy events.  Our aim is that the time both volunteers and visitors spend at Rockbourne Roman Villa, is both enjoyable and beneficial.

Working as part of the front of house team, volunteers help at our reception desk in the Sainsbury Gallery welcoming visitors and helping with admin tasks such as visitor surveys. They also help in the Gift Shop & Café Willis, serving food and drink, taking payments, booking workshops, dealing with enquiries and helping the staff keep the museum safe and tidy for visitors. You don’t have to have a great knowledge of art or history, although a willingness to learn is always welcomed. A friendly attitude and a willingness to help visitors is more important. Training is provided and staff and other volunteers are always around to help.

This public-facing role involves serving customers and staffing the till in one of our operational 1940s-era shops. Whilst dressed as an authentic 1940's shopkeeper, you will weigh out sweets by the ounce and stamp visitors’ ration cards in the Sweet Shop, while informing them about the wartime era and rationing (those sweets would have had to last all week!). In our Toy Shop, you will operate retail systems, whilst selling beautiful, vintage toys and talking to visitors about the newly installed Teddy Bear Museum!
