Located in the heart of the historic city of Winchester, City Museum tells the story of England’s ancient capital, the seat of Alfred the Great. From its origins as an Iron Age trading centre to Anglo‑Saxon glory, the last journey of Jane Austen to the hunt for King Alfred’s remains, explore the sights and sounds of Winchester past and present in the museum’s three galleries.

Data Hunters and Story Gatherers (Collections) - Winchester / Remote

Data Hunters and Story Gatherers: towards community curatorship is a unique project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.  Hunters and Gatherers is working with a new team of young volunteers to improve collections auditing and research, research significant, untold stories and develop community co-curation and engagement in new and exciting ways. The project is split between Data Hunters, who are hunting for objects in our collections related to both immigration and Basingstoke, and Story Gatherers, who are researching the social history objects in our collections.

Established in 1978 with a collection of costumes from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, Hampshire Wardrobe now has over 10,000 items in our Winchester store. From ancient times to the 1980s this is sure to be a unique volunteering location.

Milestones Museum - Basingstoke

Milestones tells the story of how people used to live, the things they used and the work they did. The maze of Victorian and 1930s streets is packed with shops, factories and houses, most based on original buildings from in and around Basingstoke.

Red House Museum

Red House Museum and Gardens - Christchurch

A former Georgian workhouse, the Red House is now a museum exploring the story of Christchurch from before the Ice Age to modern times. There are plenty of corners to escape to at the museum, including our charming herb garden and south garden, which holds unexpected dinosaur surprises. The Red House has a charming shop with a wide selection of gifts to browse or buy and the café is the perfect setting for a bite to eat or something to drink, inside or out. Throughout the year, we also run a programme of fun, family-friendly events.

The Arc

Formerly Winchester Discovery Centre and set in an iconic, Grade II listed building on the city's Jewry Street, The Arc is a partnership between Hampshire Cultural Trust and Hampshire County Council. With upgraded facilities and revamped spaces, we have a joint vision and ambition to develop The Arc as a unique cultural destination. 

Willis Museum

Willis Museum and Sainsbury Gallery - Basingstoke

Since 1984, the Willis Museum has been housed in this impressive early Victorian building that was once Basingstoke’s Town Hall. Centrally located at the Top of the Town, in the Willis Museum you will discover Basingstoke and Deane’s past, from the rich archaeological heritage beneath our feet right up to the modern day. Throughout the year, we also run a programme of touring exhibitions, as well as fun events, workshops and activities for all the family to enjoy.
