This public-facing position plays an important part in helping to run our catering offer and serve our visitors. The role includes cleaning tables, washing dishes, restocking products and serving food and beverages. Volunteers may be based in the Rooftops Café, or one of our supplementary catering outlets, such as the Vintage Tea Tent or our Victorian-era pub. A volunteer with experience in food preparation could also assist in the kitchen, particularly those who know how to bake a mean cake!

This public-facing role plays an important part in interpreting our museum collections and enhancing our visitor experience. You will welcome visitors whilst wearing an authentic costume, and give them information about various parts of the museum. This may include playing records in our gramophone shop (the younger generation will need an explanation!), climbing on board our tram, or opening up our Victorian cottage.

This public-facing role plays an important part in running additional events and activities at Milestones Museum. The museum hosts a wide range of events, and our exhibitions are constantly changing, providing a large variety of seasonal activities throughout each year. Events volunteers may help visitors to their seats during live theatre performances, manage visitor experiences such as our VR Spitfire simulator, or even aid a certain jolly fellow over the festive period! Due to the ad-hoc nature of this role, it may be well suited to those who are unable to volunteer on a more regular basis.

Our aim is that every visitor has an enjoyable and interesting visit to our museum, and you can help us achieve this expectation.

This public-facing role involves serving customers and staffing the till in one of our operational 1940s-era shops. Whilst dressed as an authentic 1940's shopkeeper, you will weigh out sweets by the ounce and stamp visitors’ ration cards in the Sweet Shop, while informing them about the wartime era and rationing (those sweets would have had to last all week!). In our Toy Shop, you will operate retail systems, whilst selling beautiful, vintage toys and talking to visitors about the newly installed Teddy Bear Museum!

This varied role plays an important part in caring for the museum and our collections, helping make sure that everything is ready for our visitors. You might be asked to repair things on the streets of the museum, keep our vehicles looking bright and clean, construct things for display, help with moving vehicles, and help us set up for events and new exhibitions. You may have the opportunity to be trained to operate some of our historic vehicles for the public, or even work with our conservator to help restore them.
