On The Move is an exciting behind the scenes, hands-on project, which will see members of our community working with an important and significant collection of historic, vintage and agricultural vehicles,as well as the tools used to make them, stored at our headquarters site in Winchester.
This collection includes vehicles produced by Hampshire based manufacturers Thornycroft, Taskers of Andover, and Wallis and Steevens.
Funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Collections Fund, On The Move is for men who want to take control of their mental health through a peer support led project, focused on developing confidence and self-esteem. Participants will bring the collection to life through investigating the store, researching objects, improving our digital catalogues and sharing their findings online and in our museum displays. Working in cohorts of approximately six men, we meet weekly to complete a variety of object based tasks and activities.
Testimony from our project participants:
“'On The Move' was excellent. It was just what I needed during the strange times surrounding lockdown. It provided me with a focus and direction while I was isolated.”
“It has been a fantastic project to be involved in”
“It's given me more confidence and a sense of achievement, which really helped me when I returned to volunteering when restrictions were lifted.”
You can read more about the impact of this project and about some of the vehicles we've researched on Culture on Call.
