The Create and Connect project was established to investigate the benefits of remotely delivered high quality arts-interventions in order to reduce risk factors of young people becoming involved in violent crime. The programme worked remotely with young people to increase skills and participation, build confidence and positive relationships as well as promoting pathways back into education and ultimately to reduce reoffending. We worked with partners to offer young people a way to be creative, stay connected and improve mental health and emotional resilience.
The Create and Connect Project ran from July 2020 – January 2021 which included:
- 150 Creative Boxes delivered directly to young people - high quality resources and booklet including arts activities developed by artists and young people and wellbeing suggestions from Hampshire CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services)
- Five artist-led projects delivered remotely – weekly online group sessions and supporting resources. Artforms included printmaking, paper art, design and fashion
The young people worked closely with artists to develop their own ideas and with their advice we developed additional online arts activities for further groups of vulnerable young people and those supporting them to use creativity as a tool to continue being creative and connected.
It was led by Hampshire Cultural Trust (HCT) with investment and support from the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF). Our partners included Hampshire Childrens Services, New Forest Young Carers, Hampshire Youth Offending Team, seven Education Centres (previously pupil referral units) across Hampshire.
