Eileen White
“My analogue photographic practice is in dialogue with nature and time, participating in a continuous cycle of regeneration, which is built around ethics of care. This offers a means of enacting an ecological responsibility through the use of recycled materials and living matter.”
As an eco-feminist, Eileen explores environmentally conscious approaches to her practice, mastering alternative, less environmentally destructive artistic processes. Essentially, this means taking time to create work using an ethical and caring framework. This dedication and integrity to process is not only impressive, but a fundamentally different way of image-making that isn’t purely representational. Concerned with natural and recycled materials, she produces her own alternative darkroom chemistry from plants and carefully transforms her darkroom waste materials into compost, which is then used to nurture her photographic garden. Working slowly, with handmade or historical cameras, she is in constant dialogue with nature and time. Ideas of interconnectedness, circularity and ongoingness are central to her work, providing ways to glimpse the beauty and inevitability of change and decay. In the context of domestic hidden labour, she attempts to mitigate the toxicity of her practice and questions what we value and our role in relation to the current climate crisis.
