This workshop is designed to be a relaxing, creative journey into the world of folk art. By combining the structured technique of reverse appliqué with the intuitive flow of slow stitching, participants will create a unique, textured piece of functional art.
Celebrate storytelling through cloth in this hands-on workshop inspired by the bold, symbolic language of folk art. Hearts, birds, botanical stems, and geometric stars come to life as participants learn the expressive technique of reverse appliqué—cutting away the surface fabric to reveal hidden layers beneath.
We begin with inspiration and design, exploring the difference between traditional and reverse appliqué before selecting from a curated gallery of folk art templates or sketching an original motif. Participants then map their design onto a cloth bag, cushion cover, or personal textile, setting the stage for a layered narrative of colour and texture.
As the workshop unfolds, the “story” of each piece emerges through thoughtful material choices. Hidden fabrics—vintage florals, treasured scraps, or vibrant solids—are layered beneath the surface and secured using simple basting techniques to ensure precision and ease.
The heart of the workshop is the transformative moment of cutting: guided, careful “window cutting” reveals the colours below, followed by hand stitching to secure and finish the edges. Participants may choose a raw, relaxed finish or a more traditional turned edge for a refined look.
Slow stitching and embellishment bring movement and personality to the work. Kantha-style running stitches, folk-inspired dots and dashes, and optional found objects—buttons, beads, or heirloom fragments—add texture and meaning.
We close with construction, finishing touches, and a mini showcase, celebrating the individuality of each piece. Participants leave with a completed textile artwork and a deeper appreciation for cloth as a medium of memory, symbolism, and slow, intentional making.
Materials
Provided: Folk art templates & pattern paper, embroidery needles & pins, sharp fabric scissors
Bring a plain cushion cover or cotton/linen bag (optional), a simple bag or fabric base will be supplied
Bring fabric scraps with sentimental value to embellish, some fabric basics will be provided.
Bring a thimble (if preferred for hand sewing)
A Note on Flexibility: This workshop is designed to be "low pressure." If a participant prefers a complex, multi-layered floral motif, we can dive into advanced cutting. If they prefer a meditative, slow-paced experience, a single folk heart with beautiful stitch-work is just as striking.
