Step into the past and bring history to life through your own creativity! Join us for a week-long celebration of traditional crafts, where each day explores a different historical era and its unique artistic techniques. From ancient patterns to medieval motifs and beyond, you’ll create your own designs as the week progresses, building a personal collection to take home as a lasting memento.

Discover, design, and immerse yourself in the artistry of ages gone by. Perfect for craft enthusiasts, history lovers, and anyone curious about the stories behind the stitches.

Part of the Rediscovering the Allen Gallery project, History by Design is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to reimagine the gallery displays and offer an exciting new activities programme! Our community programme is delivered with the generous additional support of East Hampshire District Council and Alton Town Council.

Look out for other workshops and activities during February 2026:

  • History by Design. An image of a Queen of Hearts dish, the Alton buckle, cave drawings of a mammoth and goat in brown, and the Selbourne Cup
