In line with Gosport Museums ongoing commitment to refresh its museum space, we are seeking individuals to help uncover new stories. Generate GMAG is part of the Gosport Heritage Generator Project and will see a new display in the museum co-curated by a community collective of local people.

If you're passionate about Gosport and its stories - and want to help shape and share the next chapter - please get in touch with charlie.fletcher@hampshireculturaltrust.org.uk

What is a community collective and what’s the difference from a volunteer group?

Community collectives differ from traditional volunteer groups by having a more significant role in decision-making and actively shaping exhibition content. This approach ensures exhibitions are more inclusive and representative of the diverse voices and experiences within the community. Unlike volunteer groups, community collectives operate under a fixed structure with formal, deadline-driven outputs. Participants are also rewarded for their input in the form of a voucher of their choice for each meeting they attend, which will be distributed at the end of the project as a token of appreciation for their contributions.

Why community collectives?

Community-driven exhibitions are often more relevant and relatable to local audiences and can foster a sense of community and belonging.

What do Community Collectives do?

Collaborate on co-creation projects to incorporate a variety of voices into an exhibition. Steer the direction of volunteers searching for stories and objects to ensure the topics represent the diversity and interests of the local community, challenge established ideas and narratives to ensure that exhibitions evolve in a way that aligns with the interests of the local community.

What’s the difference between this and a volunteer group?

The main difference is that community collectives follow a set plan with fixed input and deadlines, rather than being more flexible and open-ended. Participants are also rewarded for their input in the form of vouchers.
