Milestones Museum has been announced as a finalist in the prestigious School Travel Awards 2018.

The Basingstoke museum of living history, which last year hosted thousands of children on its educational visits programme, has been named as a finalist in the Best Museum Visit category. Milestones is in good company in the category: the other finalists are Cadbury World, Birmingham and the British Museum, Natural History Museum and V&A, all in London.

The School Travel Awards, which are run by School Travel Organiser magazine, shine a spotlight on the very best providers in the UK and overseas that deliver an exceptional experience of learning outside the classroom. The key aim of the awards is to reward providers that go the extra mile to offer exciting educational trips and visits for primary and secondary schools. These trips provide invaluable opportunities for students’ personal development, self-esteem and resilience and make a major contribution to their acquisition of knowledge and development of skills.

Milestones, which is operated by Hampshire Cultural Trust, offers a range of history and STEM curriculum-based educational programmes for different ages and abilities, drawing on the collections and period room sets housed in the museum. Some of the subjects covered by the museum’s educational team, which includes costumed interpreters, are toys and games, transport and travel, the Victorians, World War II and highly interactive STEM sessions using the LEGO® Mindstorms™ system.

There are a total of 17 categories in the School Travel 2018 Awards. The finalists in each category have been voted for and nominated by teachers and educational visit coordinators across the country. The full list of categories and finalists can be seen on the School Travel Organiser website, www.schooltravelorganiser.com. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony hosted by TV broadcaster and newsreader Fiona Bruce at the Royal Garden Hotel, Kensington, on Friday 16 November.
