Generate grants is part of a wider NLHF project Gosport Heritage Generator which aims to develop and sustain organisations and individuals working in or around heritage in Gosport through the provision of free training, funding, exhibitions, events and new community resources.
The grants programme runs jointly with our Generate skills free training programme which is now open for booking. All workshop participants will then be eligible to apply for grants of up to £5000 to develop projects with clear links to Gosport’s heritage and that involve a broad spectrum of the community.
All the information to apply for the grant is listed out below, as well as the documents you will need to develop your application. Once again, applicants must have attended one of the generate skills workshops found here to be considered for this grant.

Application Guidance
To apply for this funding, you must first have completed one of the training programmes or workshops offered as part of this Project. You can find more details about the training programme on our website.
We welcome applications from registered charities, companies, trusts, voluntary and community groups which are constituted and have bank accounts. We will also consider applications from individuals, schools and colleges.
Joint applications from a collective of partners will be accepted, but a lead applicant must be assigned. This lead applicant will have the grant paid into their bank account and will be responsible for completing the reporting requirements for the grant.
If you have been unsuccessful in a previous application for this funding, you are welcome to apply again. However, if you have already been successful in securing funding, you won’t be able to apply again.
These grants are designed to help participants in the training programme put their learning into action and have a particular focus on improving access to and celebration of heritage in Gosport.
What is heritage?
From historic buildings, our industrial legacy and the natural environment, to collections, traditions, stories and more, heritage can be anything from the past that you value and want to pass on to future generations. Heritage projects combine the telling of stories with interpretation and can use a variety of media and activities to communicate the message, such as:
Stories: food, fashion, transport, clubs and societies, nature, local celebrities, entertainment, music, buildings and language.
Interpretation: visual art, drama, dance, spoken word, film, audio (trails/oral history/song writing), exhibitions, workshops and events.
The NLHF website has more information here about the kinds of projects that could have a link to heritage.
To be considered for funding, your proposal must:
- Be for a specific, stand-alone project in Gosport with clear heritage links
- Apply some of the knowledge you've gained during training
- Have a public outcome that will benefit more than just the people in your group or organisation
- Be able to be completed by September 2025 (Round 1)
Where projects are seeking to work with communities, projects will be prioritised which take a co-created approach to design and delivery
What cannot be funded?
This funding cannot be used for:
- A project or activity that has already started
- Running costs or organisation overheads (e.g. rent, rates, electricity, insurance etc.)
- Continuing or extending delivery of an existing activity or project
- The general work of a group or organisation, or individual
- Acquiring land, buildings, or heritage items
You can apply for a grant of up to £5,000 per project. The grant can cover some or all the cost of the project, but if the grant doesn’t cover the whole cost of the project, we’ll ask you to tell us how you will fund the rest so we can be confident the project will go ahead. Match funding (funding from other sources) is not a requirement but may help to strengthen your application.
The funding can cover any direct costs associated with the project, including both revenue (one-off time specific costs) and selected capital (e.g. equipment), in line with the exceptions noted in the section ’How much can I apply for’
This can include materials, hire fees (including room hire), transport, and marketing. Costs associated with people’s time can also be included where the hours are being paid specifically for the delivery of the project. Invoices and receipts must be provided for all costs over £250.

A panel of three reviewers will read all the applications. The reviewers will be from organisations or groups connected to the heritage sector. Organisations or groups that panellists represent will be excluded from applying for funding in the grant round they are reviewing.
When reviewing your application, the panel will:
- Check that your idea is eligible for funding, using the criteria in t sections ‘What Ideas can be funded’ and ‘How much can I apply for?’.
- Consider whether your budget, timeline and resources are realistic. Consider whether your project is duplicating work already happening in Gosport.
- Consider how well your project addresses one of the following aims:
- People will have learned more about Gosport’s heritage, leading to a change in ideas and actions
- Your organisation or group will be better placed to sustain your work in Gosport into the future
- Gosport will be a better place to live, work or visit
Decisions will be made by consensus on the panel, with the HCT representative having the final decision in the instance of a tie. There is a limited amount of funding available in each round, and the panel will fund projects they feel best meet the criteria. Decisions by the panel are final, and all applicants (successful and unsuccessful) will receive feedback on their applications.
If your application is successful, you will be sent a grant offer letter which will tell you the terms and conditions of the funding, along with information on managing your grant.
Your grant will be paid in two stages, 90% at the start of the project and 10% when the project is completed. During your project we will be in touch to see how things are progressing. We’ll ask you to take notes and photos throughout the project development and delivery so you can provide us with evidence of your work. At the end of the project, you will be required to complete a final report summarising your work and its outcomes together with a final budget and receipts (where required.)
It’s important that people involved with your project see and understand that it’s been supported by players of The National Lottery. The National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) have produced some guidance on how to do this for your project here
The National Lottery Heritage Fund have specific requirements for ‘digital outputs’ produced as part of any funded projects. The term ‘digital output’ covers anything you create in your project in a digital format which is designed to give access to heritage and/or to help people engage with and learn about heritage. For example, this includes photographs, text, software, web and app content, databases, 3D models, sound and video recordings.
Items created in the management of the project, for example emails between team members and records of meetings, are not included in the requirement.
All digital outputs must be:
- ‘Available’ (i.e. the outputs are freely available online, copies of the digital files are held securely, and you can give access to these on demand) – for five years from the project completion date
- ‘Usable’ – the outputs function as intended and are kept up to date
- ‘Open’ – Digital Outputs are licensed for use by others under the Creative Commons ‘Attribution 4.0 International (CC-BY 4.0) licence, with the exception of code and metadata, which should be released under a Public
- Domain Dedication, unless we have agreed otherwise
Further information on this requirement is available on the NLHF website here
All grant recipients are responsible for ensuring that copyright protections are upheld throughout all stages of their project.
Applications for Round 1 will open Mon 2nd Oct 2024, and close on Fri 31st Jan 2025. Late applications will not be considered.
