The gallery is currently closed for building works. Whilst the works are taking place, we have relocated to 124 the High Street where we have created One of a Kind, a pop-up shop showcasing the talent of local makers. The shop also provides a meeting space for our existing groups and a small community exhibition area.

Gosport Gallery is a bright and welcoming exhibition space located in the historic former assembly hall of Gosport Grammar School. It hosts a wide variety of exhibitions and events from shows of work by the finest local artists to exhibitions drawing on the rich collections cared for by Hampshire Cultural Trust.

It is fast becoming a regional venue for major exhibitions either touring or on loan from national museums and collections. We also run a wide and varied programme of events ranging from talks to workshops.

Gosport Museum and Art Gallery FAQs

What is happening at Gosport Gallery?

Hampshire Cultural Trust, which operates Gosport Museum and Art Gallery, is redeveloping the venue to bring the building back to full use for the Gosport community. The work will celebrate the historic building and improve access and facilities, as well as making the site more sustainable to run.

What will be different when the building re-opens?

When the building re-opens it will have:

  • A new, permanent museum documenting Gosport’s history through the eyes of the people who live there.
  • A bigger space for the play gallery and a new community gallery.
  • A new café, providing a meeting place for our visitors and community groups and a better offer for hirers.
  • A new retail area, where there will be space for local makers and creatives to sell their wares
  • Refurbished learning rooms that are more suitable for both formal schools programmes and informal adult learning.
  • A prominent entrance onto the High Street and a new, accessible walkway linking the café and museum to the gallery.
How long will the building be closed?

Construction work commences at the end of January and the re-opening is planned for the summer

Who is paying for the building works?

In addition to investment from Hampshire Cultural Trust, match funding has been contributed by Hampshire County Council and Gosport Borough Council. Funding has also been contributed by Historic England (via the High Streets Heritage Action Zones scheme), Arts Council England, the Friends of Gosport Museum and a number of individual donors.

What is happening to the collections?

The Gosport specific collections will all remain at the venue, with many planned for display in the new museum. Visitors can view items not on display via appointment. Some collection items that don’t specifically relate to Gosport may be moved to Hampshire Cultural Trust’s larger collection stores in Winchester.

Will it still be free to visit?

Yes, you will continue to be able to visit Gosport Museum and Art Gallery for free. Throughout the year there will be the option to participate in some paid programmes, such as workshops, events and exhibitions.

Will the opening hours change?

When the building re-opens there will be extended evening opening hours from Wednesday to Friday and a new half day opening on Sunday. The building will be closed on Mondays and open all other times from 10am to 4pm.

Is anything happening while the building is closed?

Hampshire Cultural Trust will be opening a pop-up shop on the High Street while the main building is closed, offering a smaller range of activities, exhibitions and retail. Please keep an eye out on social media for the details.
